So, I found this old online quiz. It’s been a while since I’ve taken one of these, and I think the last one I took was “What Lord of the Rings race would you be?”, and I turned out to have the most in common with the Rohirrim, which actually wasn’t a surprise either.

Anyway, this quiz is “What type of writer should you be?” I was betting that it would lean me more towards mystery-thrillers than fantasy, but like all good stories, there was a twist at the end.

You Should Be a Film Writer

You don’t just create compelling stories, you see them as clearly as a movie in your mind.
You have a knack for details and dialogue. You can really make a character come to life.
Chances are, you enjoy creating all types of stories. The joy is in the storytelling.
And nothing would please you more than millions of people seeing your story on the big screen!

What Type of Writer Should You Be?

And yeah, writing for television and film is pretty much at the top of my list. So I surprised myself with this quiz, and it’s a good thing.

That was a fun weekend, but I think after 3 consecutive years of not staying in the convention hotel, I’m going to remedy that situation next year by registering early enough to get a room in the same hotel as the events.

It wasn’t as bad this year as the previous two… this year I was only a 5 minute or so walk away (3 blocks, uphill, in the cold). Last year I was a 10 minute drive away, and the year before I was a half-hour train ride away. All the data points to me getting closer, so next year I have to either be in the same hotel, or next door to it.

It was great to finally meet Matt Stover, and Scott Bakker, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Bob Urell again, since I had no idea he was going to be there. There’s something to be said for sitting at a table at a bar with Stover, Bakker, Urell and feeling like you haven’t read enough history or philosophy to even hope to keep up with them, even after they’d been drinking for several hours.

Jason and Jeremy of Night Shade are always a hoot, and I finally met Sean Wallace from Prime Books… and he introduced me to Catherynne M. Valente, who signed my copies of “Book of Dreams” (both the red and blue versions, which I picked up there). I also finally met Gavin Grant and Jeff VanderMeer, and yes, we’ll get Jeff on “Cover to Cover” soon. I also discovered a used book dealer who’s located not far from here, in Tempe, so I’ll be paying him a visit very soon.

I recorded a few panels, and a reading by Carol Emshwiller, and missed out on recording an awesome Star Wars discussion between Matt Stover, John C. Wright, and Glenn Yeffeth of BenBella Books during the book signing event… I got there about 5 minutes too late, but it was the funniest and most fun argument I’d heard in a long time. So of course I had to tell them about TD0013’s latest theory about who really killed Owen and Beru Lars (listen to Wingin’ It Show #34 to hear what I’m talking about). Matt loved it, and Glenn cracked up. I found out later that BenBella’s coming out with a Star Wars On Trial compilation, and I’m so there on that one. I also can’t wait to get my hands on their Harry Potter compilation, which should be out soon.

I did get to meet a few other publicists and publishers who I’d only exchanged emails with or talked to on the phone, so it was a real pleasure to put faces with those names, and talk about upcoming releases.

Now if only I could have the same good fortune with the publicists and agents for tv and movie people so I can get more interviews for Slice of SciFi…

First, I managed to score 2 tix to tonight’s screening of Serenity for 2 more Dragon Page contributors.

Then, I found out that I could get a ticket, but that I’d have to make some creative scheduling arrangements in order to get there on time, since I was supposed to be in class from 6-10pm, and the doors lock and the movie starts playing at 10pm.

Just when I had been pondering how to ask my instructor if I could leave early, I get a phone call… from my instructor, saying that she can’t make class and we’d all have to reschedule.

Meaning: I get to get to the theater at a decent time, and mingle with the Browncoats in line, maybe score a few interviews with fans, and pimp, I mean pump, The Dragon Page.

Serendipitous, I tell ya.

Well, there are some happy hockey fans in a few places.

The Philadelphia Phantoms won the Calder Cup, the AHL Championship this past week, and the Trenton Titans won the ECHL Championship a couple weeks ago.

Both teams are affiliated with the Philadelphia Flyers, so assuming we ever see NHL play again, Philly might have a pretty good team in a couple years.

So the fact that the hockey people aren’t even talking to each other, and the NBA people might start talking to each other, it gets me wondering… what happens if both the NHL and NBA aren’t playing this fall?

If the NHL goes two years without playing, they may as well kiss their livelihoods goodbye. Not sure I care one way or the other about the NBA.

Maybe the sports addicts will start watching soccer instead.

I followed through on my plan to get myself a new Rubik’s cube. I drove by a Toys ‘R Us on the way to the studio to record some segments for some upcoming Dragon Page “Cover to Cover” and “Wingin’ It” shows, and stopped in for a quick moment.

It’s funny, as big as that store is, and considering that I haven’t been inside one in at least 15 years, I figured out where the “adult puzzles” section was in about 45 seconds, and found the stand with Rubik’s Cubes on them in another 45 seconds.

They were $9.99, so I bought two, and I ended up playing around with one while recording the shows. I can’t believe I’ve forgotten several of the patterns to correctly align all the corners, but the rest of the patterns for realigning the other pieces came back in a flash.

In light of me feeling like a kid again, I think it’s only appropriate that I stumbled across this news item today: “40 could be the new 30 as scientists redefine age”.

I kinda like that. Gives me more time to re-explore gaming, and other “kid stuff”.
