Writing Update

I’ve pulled a short story out of the drawer, and I’ve begun reworking it. It’s too short for conventional markets — only 750 words — which is one reason I decided to set it aside a few years ago.
But I have some ideas on places to submit it, so it’s time to blow the [...]

WFC 2005

Yes, I’m at WFC, and for some reason, this time around the panels I want to attend are sparse, and spread way out. This of course, means I’ll be able to spend more time in the dealer’s room and the art room, and at the two ample used bookstores that are in between the [...]

Spreading Wings

I’m going to be interviewed again on ChuckChat tonight, where the three of us will be chatting about Serenity. My only worry is they might not be able to get a word in edgewise.
I’m also discovering that the market for flash fiction (less than 1000 words) is pretty slim, especially for stories that don’t [...]

First Draft: turned in

The first draft for my chapter in the upcoming 3rd volume of the Fantasy Writer’s Companion series was turned in. In no way do I consider it complete, but it’s going to improve between now and November.
Now, I get to tackle all the copy I need for several ads and promo materials for [...]

Writing: Progress Report

Wow… I have a bunch of works in progress, and nothing’s really done-done yet.
1) chapter instructing authors on how to deal with media and radio interviews for the 3rd book in the Fantasy Writer’s Companion series: approx 1800 words
2) chapters for a book I’m transcribing from audio tape lectures: approx 6200 words
3) contemporary fantasy novel-in-progress: [...]

writing update

I did some productive brainstorming on my novel Friday and Saturday, and it’ll be interesting for me to see how well some of these ideas will work themselves into the existing framework.
The last time I had a major plotstorm, I ended up yanking about 55,000 words out of the story.
No, I didn’t just toss them… [...]

LepreCon 31 Overview

LepreCon 31 was held in Carefree, AZ this weekend, and it was a fun time for the most part. I don’t know why they scheduled panels to start at 11:30pm Saturday night, when it was obvious a lot of folks were fading, and would much rather have been sleeping or drinking.
Most of the Dragon [...]

silence, trepidation, and unfounded fears

Do I post any of my shorter works here, for all the world to see?
Do I post excerpts of my longer in-progress works, to obtain feedback and criticism (constructive or otherwise)?
Do I step into the abyss, or do I continue to let my fears about how my writing will be received dominate my creativity?
And do [...]

what to write, how much to write

I have two recurring, common problems that I run into while writing: how much to write, and what to write.
It’s not what is sounds like.
How much detail should I go into regarding characters, settings, and the surroundings around the action? I don’t want to drag out descriptions for 20 pages, because that seems to only [...]
